Artist's Statement:
In the years I have been painting, I have continued to evolve
and change; to keep my mind open to new ideas and concepts.
And perhaps that is the one truth in art. Artists continue to
learn, experiment, and push boundaries, but we must not limit
ourselves strictly to artistic and intellectual pursuit. We must
also include our emotional and spiritual awareness; and our
social responsibility as members of the human race. All of this
contributes a unique dimension to each work.

Medium and Technique:
My preferred medium is oil, which I use mainly for large canvases. The workability of oil paint
makes it my medium of choice for landscapes, portraits, and abstracts. However, I also like to
use acrylic paint, watercolours, gouache, and pastels. I use acrylics mainly for my botanicals,
and watercolours and gouache for my wildlife paintings. Occasionally I will incorporate other
mediums, such as gold leaf, modeling paste, crayons, and various objects found in the studio.
I rather enjoy working with gold leaf as it brings a physical and psychological high-light to a
painting. I have also sculpted in stone and wood.
Thomas was born and raised in the Beach neighbourhood of Toronto, and resides there to this
day. He began his art rather late in life. At forty, he began sculpting with wood before switching
to stone. After contracting a breathing ailment, the fine dust from the wood and stone irritated
his lungs, so Thomas started to paint. He also enrolled in the Fine Art program at George
Brown College.
Encouraged by his instructors and fascinated by all the different techniques he was discovering,
Thomas began painting as often as he could. He further studied painting with Stefan Galvanek,
a well-known painter with a studio in the west end of the city.
Thomas continues working full time as an IT Project Manager with a Canadian publishing
company, but many late evenings and weekends are spent painting. He continues to study, and
makes use of many different media and techniques (watercolours, pastel, acrylic, oil, mixed
media, gold leaf, collage, etc...). Each work - be it a portrait in oil, a landscape in acrylic or a
wildlife study in watercolour - further enhances his passion for painting. “I love painting, from
the initial formation of ideas, to the stretching of canvas and finish varnishing”.

As artists we explore, interpret, feel around, and discover all the inter-relationships
represented by our own individual complexity. We try to find a new reality; a new
presentation of form, colour, and dimension. We look for a new truth to be added
to the world. We look to contribute a significant work to the legacy of the art world.
